TECHNICAL CONSIDERATIONS ABRSM’s recommended tempo for this piece is 144 bpm, as played in this video, and a good steady tempo is required throughout. Careful execution of the slurs is vital in order to recreate the elegant and graceful sound required in this type of 18th Century Classical style. The main consideration is remembering that any slurred notes can be played lighter at the end of each group - this creates a light-hearted and delicate effect, which is much needed. I tended to play most of the left-hand quavers in a bouncy staccato-like manner, in order to give the piece some lift, which is a common approach when playing this style of music, but it is not strictly necessary, more a matter of personal choice. Dynamics are relatively straightforward, but be sure to look out for the crescendos in bars 17, 20, 36, and 39, because the gradual building up of volume on those particular areas adds style and accuracy to the performance and is very effective. The closing bars don’t appear to have any rit. (slowing down) markings, although a slight easing of the tempo on the final two bars (41 & 42) could work well, provided it is subtle.

Dynamics are straightforward, but they tend to change suddenly, so just be aware of when they occur. The treble clef appears in the left-hand part of bar 17, returning to bass clef at bar 21, then returning to treble clef at bar 24, then finally back to bass clef at bar 26 until the end of the piece, so be careful to look out for those clef changes. Although there is no rit. marked at the end, a poco rit. in the penultimate bar (59) would seem natural to play.

TECHNICAL CONSIDERATIONS ABRSM’s recommended tempo for this piece is 80 bpm, as played in this video. The most important aspect to be aware of when playing this piece is the use of pedalling - if you play exactly as instructed the sound can become dissonant and very muffled and the effect can be quiet off-putting and might even sound “wrong”. At bar 17, rather than hold the left-hand minim chord on beat 2 for the remainder of the bar, I instead pedalled it, and adopted a similar approach in some of the following bars during that section - this isn’t really necessary, provided you hold down those chords for their full values. Dynamics are straightforward, but try to develop a good gradually fading effect of the final section, from bar 27 to the end, and watch out for the rit. (slowing down) at bar 36 until the end.
